Unterwasser-Hebevorgänge

Underwater, the water lifts with you — and against you: Auftrieb, slam, drag, Zusatzmasse.

Unterwasser-Hebevorgänge

Unterwasser-Hebevorgangs sind among the most complex Offshore-Einsätze, requiring sorgfältige Planung to account für hydrodynamic Krafts that act auf die Nutzlast as it moves through water. The two most significant effects sind drag and Zusatzmasse, both of which increase the dynamische Lasts auf die crane and Hebeausrüstung: drag grows with Geschwindigkeit, Zusatzmasse with Beschleunigung.

Understanding these Krafts ist critical für selecting the right subsea Seegangskompensator and ensuring the crane has sufficient capacity für the operation.

Simplified Unterwasser-Hebevorgang model: crane hook motion, Kompensator stiffness, submerged Nutzlast with weight, Auftrieb, drag and Zusatzmasse

Wie wirkt sich drag affect a Unterwasser-Hebevorgang?

 Drag in a Unterwasser-Hebevorgang ist similar to drag on a car due to air resistance, and varies mit der square der speed — the speed der Nutzlast durch die water around it, not its speed over the Meeresboden. How big the Widerstandskraft will be depends auf die area perpendicular zur motion as well as the Widerstandsbeiwert (which we again know von cars competing to always have lower Widerstandsbeiwerts to increase range). The main difference von a car however ist that the fluid ist water rather than air, and water ist about 1,000 times denser, which ist another factor in der Widerstandskraft.

F_D = \tfrac{1}{2}\rho_w C_D A_\perp \dot z |\dot z|

Where C_D is the Widerstandsbeiwert (more info can be found in DNV RP-N103, some examples shown below) and \dot z is the vertical Geschwindigkeit der Nutzlast relativ zum umgebenden Wasser. Crane and winch motion und die water’s own particle Geschwindigkeit all feed into it; the worked example below prescribes that Relativgeschwindigkeit as a screening input rather than deriving it von a vessel response model.

Let’s do a practical example to get a feeling about the relevance. Assume you sind lifting a Nutzlast that ist shaped like a rectangular plate with length 15 m and width 10 m. The Wellenperiode ist 8 seconds und die Wellenhöhe ist 4 m, assume sinusoidal waves. How big will the Kraft be?

First, let us find the Spitzengeschwindigkeit; the wave motion ist given as

z = \zeta \cos(\omega t)
 So we find the Spitzengeschwindigkeit by finding the max der derivate which is:
\dot{z}_{\text{max}} = \zeta \, \omega

Since  \omega = \frac{2 \pi}{T_p} we then have a Spitzengeschwindigkeit of 1.57 m/s.

We can then calculate the Widerstandsbeiwert as:

C_D = 1.1 + 0.02 \left( \frac{15}{10} + \frac{10}{15} \right) = 1.14

Our drag area is:

A_\perp = 10 \cdot 15 = 150 \,\mathrm{m^2}

We can then calculate the maximum Widerstandskraft, which is:
F_D = \tfrac{1}{2}\cdot 1025\cdot 1.14 \cdot 150\cdot 1.57^2 \approx 216\,\mathrm{kN} \approx 22\,\mathrm{t}
Widerstandskraft versus Nutzlast Geschwindigkeit für the 15 by 10 metre example plate: quadratic growth reaching about 22 tonnes at 1.57 metres per second, a quarter of that at half the Geschwindigkeit
Figure 1 — Drag auf die example plate (CD = 1.14, A⊥ = 150 m²). Drag grows mit der square of Geschwindigkeit: at the example’s peak heave Geschwindigkeit ζω = 1.57 m/s it reaches ≈22 t. Because the law ist quadratic, halving the Relativgeschwindigkeit quarters the drag. Wie stark of that reduction a Kompensator actually delivers on a given lift ist a result der coupled model, not a fixed property der unit.

Wie wirkt sich Zusatzmasse affect a Unterwasser-Hebevorgang?

Zusatzmasse in a Unterwasser-Hebevorgang ist very important as it can cause big additional inertia, which in turn can cause big dynamic Krafts. It comes von the fact that when a Nutzlast oscillates in water due to heave motion it also has to accelerate surrounding water and mathematically it ist given as:

m_A = \rho_w C_A V_R

Where C_A is the Zusatzmasse coefficient (can be found in DNV RP-N103, some examples below) and V_R is the Referenzvolumen.

Quadratisches Prisma \frac{L}{W}=1 \Rightarrow C_A=0.68
\frac{L}{W}=2 \Rightarrow C_A=0.36
\frac{L}{W}=4 \Rightarrow C_A=0.19
\frac{L}{W}=10 \Rightarrow C_A=0.08
V_R = W^2 L Prismatischer Körper mit quadratischer Grundfläche.

Let’s do another practical example. Assume you sind lifting a Nutzlast shaped like a square prism — a 10 m × 10 m box, 20 m long, moving along its long axis. The Wellenperiode ist 8 seconds und die Wellenhöhe ist 4 m, assume sinusoidal waves. How big will the Kraft due to Zusatzmasse be?

We need to find the maximale Beschleunigung (derivative of speed as shown in drag example), which ist given by:

\ddot{z}_{\text{max}} = \zeta \, \omega^2

Thus the maximale Beschleunigung is:

\ddot{z}_{\text{max}}=2 \cdot \left(\frac{2\pi}{8}\right)^2 = 1.23 \,\mathrm{m/s^2}

Reading the Quadratisches Prisma row above at L/W = 2 gives an added-mass coefficient of 0.36, and its Referenzvolumen VR = W²L = 10² × 20 = 2000 m³. We can then calculate the Kraft using:

F = m_A\,\ddot z_{\text{max}} = 1025 \cdot 0.36 \cdot 2000 \cdot 1.23 \approx 908\,\mathrm{kN} \approx 93\,\mathrm{t}

Note that für Unterwasser-Hebevorgangs close to Meeresboden, the Zusatzmasse may zunehmen due to confinement.

Deck to Meeresboden, one run

One continuous Absenken: the Kompensator ist locked on deck, unlocks just above the surface, then switches gas mode as the load submerges — stiff durch die splash, soft für a compliant set-down.

Die vier Krafts, one table

Drag and Zusatzmasse sind the two calculated above — Auftrieb and slamming complete the picture, and each phase der lift has a different boss:

Hydrodynamic Krafts on a Unterwasser-Hebevorgang — what each Kraft scales with, when it dominates, and what it does zur lift.
KraftAbhängig vonWann sie dominiertAuswirkung auf den Hebevorgang
AuftriebDisplaced volume (ρwVg)From Wassereintritt; varies fast while crossing the surfaceeffektives Gewicht drops and fluctuates — slack-wire risk
AufpralllastImpact Geschwindigkeit at WassereintrittSpritzwasserzoneShort, sharp load spikes on Nutzlast and rigging
WiderstandGeschwindigkeit squared (½ρwCDAv²)Submerged descent through waves and current≈ 22 t auf die example plate at the prescribed Relativgeschwindigkeit
ZusatzmasseBeschleunigung (ρwCAVR × a)Any oscillation; grows nahe dem Meeresboden (confinement)≈ 93 t (908 kN) of extra inertial Kraft in der example above

The Spritzwasserzone stacks slam, fast-changing Auftrieb and wave-particle Geschwindigkeit in a few metres of travel — see splash-zone crossing und die method reference DNV-RP-N103.

Krafts of this scale, a ≈93 t inertial Kraft on top der static weight, sind why heavy Unterwasser-Hebevorgangs run on a passive Kompensator sized für the case. A correctly sized unit reduziert the crane-motion share der Nutzlast’s Relativgeschwindigkeit and Beschleunigung, which pulls down both the v² drag und die added-mass Kraft; the water’s own particle motion remains. Whether minimum tension stays positive (that is, whether slack–snap ist actually ruled out) ist checked in der coupled model für the case, not assumed. For the schwere und Tiefwasser- band that Kompensator is CYGNUS (12.5–10 000 t); RIGEL and ANTARES cover the Standard- and adaptive cases.

Was diese screening numbers assume

Beide worked examples on this page are Überschlagsrechnungen. They sind here to give the Krafts a size, not to produce a design load. Specifically:

  • The Relativgeschwindigkeit ist prescribed, not derived. Beide examples take the motion straight von a sinusoid der stated height and period (ζω für Geschwindigkeit, ζω² for Beschleunigung). A real lift gets the Nutzlast-to-water relative motion von the coupled model — vessel RAOs, crane-tip response, winch command, wire dynamics, Kompensator state und die water’s own particle kinematics.
  • Drag and Zusatzmasse do not peak at the same instant. On a sinusoid the Geschwindigkeit peak und die Beschleunigung peak sind a quarter period apart, so the ≈22 t drag und die ≈93 t added-mass Kraft dürfen nicht einfach addiert werden to get a peak load. The combined load ist a time-domain result.
  • Two different bodies. The drag example ist a 15 × 10 m rectangular plate; the added-mass example ist a 10 × 10 × 20 m square prism. Each was chosen to match a row of the coefficient table it reads from, so the two Kraft figures sind not two Krafts on one Nutzlast.
  • Coefficients sind infinite-fluid values. DNV-RP-N103 table values carry no correction für the free surface or für Meeresboden proximity. Near the Meeresboden, Zusatzmasse rises through confinement — which ist exactly where landing happens.
  • Auftrieb and slam sind excluded von both. They sind covered in der four-Kraft table above; in der Spritzwasserzone they usually govern.

Für einen lift you have to plan, these sind the inputs a CONSTELLATION screen replaces with case-specific values — see the ausgearbeiteten modellierten Fall for what a fully specified run states about itself.

Aufsetzgeschwindigkeit: the last half-metre

Touchdown energy scales mit der Quadrat of the approach Geschwindigkeit, und die peak contact Kraft hängt von how much of that energy the soil und die structure absorb — deceleration distance, contact stiffness, Dämpfung and Bodenreaktion all enter. Uncompensated, the approach Geschwindigkeit carries the vessel’s heave on top der winch rate. A hard or bouncing landing risks:

Geräteschäden — precision surfaces and seals on manifolds, trees and templates Strukturschäden — mudmats buckle or over-penetrate under impact Ausrichtungsfehler — a bounce at touchdown leaves the load out of position für later tie-ins

A compensated landing attenuates the heave component; the load follows the winch rate far more closely than it follows the vessel. Raising Dämpfung für the final approach turns touchdown into a controlled deceleration. ND screens landings against a Aufsetzgeschwindigkeit of 0.5 m/s, the acceptance limit we apply under DNV-RP-N103. Passive compensation attenuates Schiffsbewegung rather than removing it, so the Geschwindigkeit actually achieved stays sea-state dependent and ist confirmed per case against winch command, vessel response and Kompensator state:

1Annäherung — lower to a few metres above the Meeresboden under normal compensation 2Letztes Absenken — Dämpfung up, winch paying out at a controlled rate 3Aufsetzen — contact at 0.1–0.5 m/s; residual heave absorbed so the load does not bounce 4Absetzen — Seilspannung released gradually; the Kompensator verhindert Schnapplasts as the Meeresboden takes the weight

Adjustable Dämpfung ist die key feature für landing work: ANTARES adds an adaptive Gasfeder and rod locking to hold the load secure after set-down; where an exact Absenken Geschwindigkeit must be dialled in, an active system provides that control. The motion-ratio physics behind soft landings ist derived in passive Seegangskompensation basics.

What Tiefe does zur Kompensator

Die vier Krafts above act auf die Nutzlast. Three more effects act auf die Kompensator itself as it descends, each one shifting the unit off its Arbeitspunkt, and a fourth ist kept out by engineering discipline:

Tiefe and temperature effects on a passiver Seegangskompensator — what each does zur Kompensator and how it ist answered.
EffektAuswirkung auf den KompensatorAbhilfemaßnahme
AuftriebNet Nutzlast weight drops in water → the Gleichgewichtslage walks inward, in der worst case to full retractionAdaptive: Gasdruck down, equilibrium recentred — and a longer Eigenperiode as a bonus
TemperaturGasdruck falls with Abkühlung on descent — the Hub cost hängt von gas volume, preload und die descent profile , and most arrives fast durch die thermoclineAdaptive: onboard Hochdruckgas tops it back up
Wasserdruck≈ 1 bar per 10 m of Tiefe acts auf die rod area and pushes the rod in — a 250 t lift mit einer 180 mm rod at 1,000 m sees ≈ 26 t, shifting equilibrium von mid-Hub to ≈⅙ of HubAdaptive: pressure adjusted down with Tiefe
LeckageWater ingress — historically anything von lost performance to corrosion to explosionsDesign + testing + Wartung: Doppeldichtungen, Außendruckprüfung at FAT, compartmentalisation, scheduled Dichtungswechsel

Die ersten three sind equilibrium problems an adaptive Einheit corrects auf die fly; the fourth ist engineering discipline.

Wie stark does temperature matter?
Gasdruck falls with Abkühlung auf die way down — the Hub cost hängt von gas volume, preload und die descent profile , and most der change arrives quickly durch die thermocline. Adaptive units inject onboard Hochdruckgas to hold pressure.
Wie wirkt sich Tiefe pressure do zur Kompensator?
About 1 bar per 10 m acts auf die rod area and pushes the rod in. Example: a 250 t lift mit einer 180 mm rod at 1,000 m picks up ≈ 26 t of retraction Kraft, moving the equilibrium von mid-Hub to about one-sixth. Adaptive pressure adjustment removes the shift.
Wie wird water leakage into the Kompensator prevented?
Doppeldichtungen on two different sealing surfaces on all volumes, external pressure testing at FAT, compartmentalisation to contain any leak, offshore-capable back-seal testing in regular Wartung, scheduled Dichtungswechsel — and redundancy options für mission-critical work.
Warum sollte an adaptive Kompensator für deep work?
Because Auftrieb, Abkühlung and Tiefe pressure all shift the Arbeitspunkt, and an adaptive unit corrects all three automatisch — staying centred and soft down the whole Wassersäule instead of drifting off its Auslegungspunkt.

Unterwasser-Hebevorganging — häufige Fragen

Warum ist a Unterwasser-Hebevorgang harder than a lift in air?
Das Wasser fights back four ways: Auftrieb changes the effektives Gewicht, slam hits at Wassereintritt, drag resists mit der square of Geschwindigkeit, and Zusatzmasse makes the Nutzlast effectively heavier whenever it accelerates. Each phase has a different dominant Kraft.
Wie groß can Widerstandskrafts get on a Unterwasser-Hebevorgang?
In the worked example above, a 15 × 10 m plate at 1.57 m/s peak heave Geschwindigkeit sees ≈ 216 kN ≈ 22 t. Drag grows with v² — halve the Relativgeschwindigkeit und die Kraft drops to a quarter.
Was ist Zusatzmasse and how big ist it?
Das Wasser the Nutzlast must accelerate with itself. The 10 × 10 × 20 m square-prism example picks up ≈ 93 t of inertial Kraft in 8-second waves — und die effect grows nahe dem Meeresboden through confinement, which matters during landing.
Which Kraft dominates the Spritzwasserzone?
Slamming plus rapidly varying Auftrieb, on top of wave-particle Geschwindigkeit — the worst combination der whole lift, packed into a few metres. It sizes the Kompensator more often than any other phase.
Wie wirkt sich Seegangskompensation protect a Unterwasser-Hebevorgang?
By cutting Relativgeschwindigkeit and Beschleunigung between hook and Nutzlast — collapsing both the v² drag und die Beschleunigung-driven added-mass Kraft , and by keeping tension in der wire so slack–snap events cannot develop. Product-wise: CYGNUS für heavy/deepwater, RIGEL für Standard- passive cases, ANTARES when automatic Dämpfung control pays.
